About
Learn the art of contemporary batik in this delightful workshop inspired by the work of Vanessa da Silva.
Join Celia Hume, a contemporary batik artist and learn how to create your very own batik portrait. Experiment with layering and shape to create an image that echoes the portraits of da Silva.
Celia will teach you the basics of batik painting (using procion dyes on cotton fabric with tjantings) and help you to create a stunning contemporary portrait that can be as subtle and delicate, or as bold and bright as you like. Play with colours and shape and celebrate all that it means to be creative.
Celia grew up in Shropshire and has always loved painting and colour, inspired by the landscapes and nature surrounding her. She went on to study the history of art with fine art and then completed a second degree in visual art and design while teaching in Manchester.
After completing her second degree (specialising in Illustration) she went on to illustrate book covers and magazines. During lockdown she experimented with batik techniques and found it to be a fascinating medium with endless possibilities. She developed her own unique, contemporary style, focusing on portraiture.
Her portraits have been displayed in exhibitions by The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Society of Women Artists, The Royal Cambrian Academy and INGDiscerning Eye.
This workshop is suitable for ages 12+, due to the hot nature of the wax. If you would like to request any access support or to contact us with any questions, please email [email protected]
