In a nutshell. Unexpected doorways into our past.
Who said that history starts and ends with castles? The churches and chapels of rural Conwy are equally as fascinating – as long as you know where to look.
That’s where Sacred Doorways come in. They are a series of trails to churches and chapels that open up thousands of years of history and heritage. Religion is just part of it. Sacred Doorways offer an insight into the lives of sinners as well as saints, princes as well as pilgrims, bandits as well as bards.
There are four trails in all throughout rural Conwy – Sacred Hiraethog, Sacred Snowdonia, Sacred Kingdom and Sacred Landscapes – neatly packaged into clusters that you can explore easily by car or designated walking routes.
What do they reveal? You’ll be surprised. There’s a beautiful church that inspired poet William Wordsworth, for example. Ancestors of an American president are linked with another. A legendary dragon hides in the beams of one church. And there are many memories of the Princes of Gwynedd, the dynasty of influential medieval leaders.
As a bonus, the trails take you through lovely hidden landscapes to timeless traditional towns and villages you might otherwise never have visited. Start your journey here by downloading the Sacred Doorways trail.
