Purpose of Research
The purpose of this research is to build a clear understanding of the current night-time economy activity and, subsequently, to identify steps that can eb taken to improve Conwy County’s night-time economy.
The night-time economy (NTE) is used to describe a wide range of activities which take place after 6pm and before 6am, and includes things like retail, transport, eating out in a restaurant, leisure activities or going to an event or concert. It also includes activities that support these sectors such as security and safety.
The focus of this research is to identify interventions to grown the tourism sector whilst maintaining balance of local and visitor benefit.
The NTE plays an important role in Conwy, North Wales and Wales as a whole, making significant contributions to the economies and vibrancy of its urban and rural centres.
Conwy County Borough Council have consistently recognised the importance of the NTE as a significant driver of overnight stays and a key means of generating more year-round, quality jobs from tourism. 2022 STEAM data for Conwy shows that staying visitors represent 66% of total economic impact whilst only accounting for 27% of visitors.
The final output of this research will be a Feasibility Study which identifies intervention that will support the development and growth of the NTE in Conwy County and sets out a pathway for Conwy County to become a Purple Flag destination. The study will include:
Mapping of the Night time Economy
Analysis of opportunities and challenges
UK and European case studies showcasing best practice in the management and growth of NTEs
Action plan with a series of prioritised interventions and recommendations.
The survey is available until 21st July 2024, and can be accessed online here
